Sri Thiripura Sundari sametha Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple, Kumizhi
In order that the millions of devotees who struggle afloat the ocean of birth and rebirth may live and survive, Lord Siva, in all his innate kindness and love for humanity, graces our world in various forms in innumerable temples across the land. One of those temples is the more than 1200 year old Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple at Kumizhi, which is surrounded by three mountains filled with medicinal herbs. Its temple tank also has medicinal properties, so that bathing in its water and applying its mud to the body results in the disappearance of severe illnesses. Another special feature of this temple is that Viswa Viruksha is itself spread out in the form of an umbrella to the Siva Linga, a sight that cannot be beheld at any other Siva temple anywhere else.
Sthala Puranam
Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple, Kumizhi, is located at a distance of 9 km from Guduvancheri, on the road heading east towards Nellikuppam. Amidst the beautiful and peaceful surroundings of dense forest, Sri Tiripura Sundari sameta Sri Vedagiriswarar graces this temple with their divine presence.
"Surrounded by three mountains, in the midst of dense forest,
Stands Sri Vedagiriswarar - whose devotees
Find their lives filled with well being - by
Guduvancheri Kumizhi!"
Nearly 900 years ago, Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple was constructed at Kumizhi by a king of the Pallava dynasty, including a Siva Lingam within its premises. Over the course of time, the temple was overgrown with vines and plants of various kinds, giving it the appearance of a ruin, and the temple was lost to the people of the region. A Brahmin living in this village was suffering from severe illness, making it impossible for him to leave his home. He was extremely worried about not being able to arrange for the marriages of his three young daughters before his death. A traveler who happened to pass through the village, a devotee of Siva, saw the Brahmin's pitiable state, and informed him of Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple that was hidden in the midst of the forest nearby. He told the Brahmin to pray to Sri Vedagiriswarar at the temple, bathe in the temple tank known as "Saroni Thadaagam", and apply its mud on his body. The Brahmin proceeded to do accordingly, and within a few weeks a miracle occurred. The serious illness the Brahmin had suffered from disappeared without a trace, and he began to glow with health. Soon the marriages of his three young daughters also got arranged, and the Brahmin was filled with happiness at having fulfilled his duty towards them. As he began to sing the praises of Sri Vegagiriswarar Temple, the people of the region became aware of the amazing healing powers of the "Saroni Thadaagam", and they flocked in droves to apply its mud on their bodies and become healed of their diseases.
"Even mud becomes a medicine, and water becomes a feast,
Serious illnesses disappear without a trace -
Just by praying to Sri Vedagiriswarar"
Overgrown with vines and plants of all kinds, and lost within the dense forest, Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple was rediscovered by Mr. Vasu in a dream. With the grace of Lord Siva, he has worked hard to repair the temple at considerable expense to himself, and successfully restored the temple to its lost glory. Now Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple at Kumizhi is stunning to behold, and is frequented by devotees from near and far. The temple tank known as "Saroni Thadaagam" is filled with cool water that does not dry up even in the height of summer. With sweet water in the temple tank, beautiful natural surroundings of dense forest, a peaceful environment that fills devotees' hearts with divine thoughts, a view of three mountains around the temple, a cool medicinal breeze blowing at all times, an endless water spring that quenches the thirst of devotees, a statue of Sri Vedagiriswarar in the form of a Siva Lingam in the sanctum sanctorum, a temple of Sri Thiripura Sundari beside it, and the cool shade of trees such as Vilva Maram and Vanni Maram, this temple at Kumizhi is indeed a pilgrimage site that no devotee of Lord Siva should miss visiting at least once in a lifetime. There are special poojas on Tuesday - Friday, and Giri Valam on every Pournami day of the month. At the entrance of the temple is an 18 feet high statue of Valampuri Vinayagar in all his glory.
Surrounding him, on all four sides, are Valampuri, Idampuri, Narthana and Panjamuga Ganapathi idols for worshippers to pray to. As a golden idol of Anjaneyar looks on smiling, Sridevi, Boodevi, Srinivasa Perumal, Garuda Alwar, Dattatreyar, Kaala Bairavar, Navagrahas, as well as Chandran, Guru, Suryan, each of whom has a separate shrine dedicated in which they appear in grace. In addition to the shrines of Sri Lakshmi and Sri Saraswathi, there are also individual shrines for Kamakshi, Meenakshi, Visalakshi and Mahakali. Beneath the shade of the trees known as Athi Maram and Veppa Maram, alongside a termite hill in which snakes live, there are shrines for Palayathammam, Ashta Durga, Lakshmi Ganapathy, Subramaniar with his consorts Valli and Devyani, as well as the Sabarimala Sastha. This temple has shrines not only for gods and goddesses, but also for the Naalvar who sang the Thevaram, the 18 Sithars, and the 7 Saptha Kannis, each of them in individually dedicated shrines. Several species of trees, such as Athi Maram, Arasa Maram, Veppa Maram, Vilva Maram, and Vanni Maram, are scattered all over the grounds of this temple, casting such a cool shade that the sun's heat never reaches the ground that devotees walk on. It is a divine miracle that all the dieties that any and all devotees pray to are all present in this one temple, so that they can all be prayed to at one time. The sweet smell of medicinal herbs, the cool breeze of the forest, the frolicking wildlife such as deer, peacocks, mynah, kuil, cranes and storks, that appear every so often to the eyes of devotees, are all testament to the reality of this temple being visited by Sithars on an ongoing basis to this day. For an end to problems such as difficulties in arranging marriages and the heartbreak of childlessness, for the achievement of peace of mind, for success in every endeavour, and for an end to serious illness, Sri Vedagiriswarar Temple at Kumizhi is a godsend to all devotees, near and far.
